Built for autonomy

Cybercab is Tesla's dedicated robotaxi: a compact two-seater designed without a steering wheel or pedals. Tesla unveiled the concept on 10 October 2024 at the We, Robot event at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, where attendees rode prototype Cybercabs on the studio lot. Gigafactory Texas built the first production unit in February 2026 and has been ramping since. The hardware is now EPA-certified, but Tesla's own Robotaxi page still says Cybercab rides come "in the future" — today's public Robotaxi trips use Model Y in a handful of US cities.

Unveiled at We, Robot

Tesla presented Cybercab on 10 October 2024 at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank as the centrepiece of We, Robot. About twenty concept cars circulated the studio outlot that night, offering attendees rides. The show car was a two-passenger hatchback with automatic butterfly doors, no door handles, no rear window, no side mirrors, and a large rear cargo hatch. Elon Musk said production would start in 2026 — "before 2027" — at a target price under $30,000, with inductive charging instead of a plug and an operating-cost claim around $0.20 per mile. The same event previewed Optimus and a 20-seat Robovan concept. Tesla used both "Cybercab" and "Robotaxi" on the night; Cybercab is the purpose-built vehicle, while Robotaxi is the ride service.

What the EPA filing added

May 2026 EPA documents were the first public production-spec sheet. Cybercab is a front-wheel-drive passenger car — unique in the current Tesla lineup — with a single 163 kW (219 hp) permanent-magnet motor, a compact ~48 kWh pack, and a 3,113 lb (1,412 kg) kerb weight. Journalists applying the standard 0.7 adjustment to the 418.2-mile unadjusted combined lab result land near 293 miles, which matches Tesla's earlier "close to 300 miles" claim. The certificate lists an introduction-into-commerce date of 29 May 2026. That clears US emissions and efficiency paperwork; it is not unsupervised-driving approval.

Production vs service

Tesla posted the first Giga Texas production Cybercab on 17 February 2026 and later said volume production started in April. Engineering tests of a customer-spec unit on Austin public roads were reported in late June 2026, with a passenger on board and no steering position. Tesla's Q1 2026 update still listed Cybercab as pilot production and said the purpose-built cab would eventually replace Model Y in the Robotaxi fleet. As of late August 2026, tesla.com/robotaxi offers paid rides in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa using Model Y, and still describes Cybercab rides as coming later. Reports of a 3 September 2026 Austin launch event and employee-only Cybercab rides remain unverified against Tesla's public pages.

Pricing and availability

The sub-$30,000 figure is company guidance from the unveil, not a published configurator price. Tesla has said it intends to sell Cybercab to customers and fleets, but the car is not generally available to private buyers. Tesla's July 2026 first-responder guide describes a two-seat cabin, typically no steering wheel or pedals, a landscape centre screen, no glovebox, gold colouration, and an SAE Level 4 system when in Autonomous Mode — that is Tesla's design claim, not a regulator's sign-off for unsupervised public service in your city. Check Tesla and local authorities before assuming you can book or buy one.
