As you leave
Your seat position and mirror preferences adjust to your Driver Profile. Shift into Drive or Reverse and external cameras show what's around your vehicle. If an object is detected, you'll hear a chime.
Along the way
Your Tesla monitors driving and uses chimes and vibrations to help you stay in your lane, keep to the speed limit, and know if there is a pedestrian, object, or other vehicle in your blind spots. It can even detect drowsiness.
When parking
Repark using cameras and Park Assist. Blind spot monitoring helps when opening your door — alerting you and pausing if a cyclist or pedestrian is approaching. Child Left Alone Detection and Sentry Mode add protection when you're away.
While you're driving, active safety features like Forward Collision Warning and Emergency Braking can alert you or take action before things go wrong.
Forward Collision Warning
Front cameras detect if you're approaching an object, pedestrian, or vehicle too quickly. If a collision is likely unless you take immediate action, you'll hear a warning and the object will appear in red on your touchscreen.
Automatic Emergency Braking
If you aren't taking action and a collision appears imminent, your Tesla activates Automatic Emergency Braking to reduce torque and apply the brakes — slowing your speed and reducing impact severity.
Dynamic Brake Lights
When driving over 31 mph and braking suddenly, Dynamic Brake Lights flash your brake lights quickly to warn other drivers that your vehicle is rapidly slowing down.
Some crashes are unavoidable. Impact-absorbing zones, a stiff passenger compartment, and advanced seat belts and airbags that deploy within milliseconds all help protect occupants.
The chassis and frame absorb crash energy before it reaches the cabin — protecting occupants and the battery from direct impact energy and reducing severity for other vehicles too.
Advanced airbags deploy according to crash type and occupant size, with active venting that adjusts pressure based on expected crash severity. Far-side airbags between first-row occupants help prevent occupant-to-occupant contact.
Front cameras observe the scenario and prepare the seat belt system to react faster with adequate force when impact occurs, reducing slack. Seat belts adjust according to detected seat position.
Safety doesn't stop after a crash.
When a serious collision is detected, hazard lights turn on, doors automatically unlock for emergency access, and your Tesla contacts emergency services.
Vehicle structures cushion and protect the battery in an accident. Onboard systems automatically disconnect the high-voltage battery upon impact. If a battery fire occurs, the pack is designed to spread heat away from the cabin.
Dashcam clips and anonymised impact data from crashes are used by Tesla's safety engineering team to improve existing features and develop new ones — shared with the global fleet through over-the-air updates.
